Substance Abuse in Older Adults
[ send me this paper ]
A 17 page paper examining the problems of alcohol and drug abuse in adults over the age of 60. Though increasing numbers of aging baby boomers may usher in the occurrence of many more cases of abuse of illicit drugs, currently it is prescription drugs and alcohol that cause the greatest number of substance abuse cases among those over the age of 60. Some seniors become drug abusers unwittingly and insidiously, often through misuse of prescription drugs and lack of knowledge of the drugs’ intended actions. Alcohol abuse can occur for the same kinds of reasons, given that its effects are more pronounced in the presence of the effects of age. Seniors likely need to be educated in these factors at the same time that they are being urged to consistently take their blood pressure medication or check their blood sugar. Whatever the reason that seniors cross the line into substance abuse, intervention needs to be thoughtful and sensitive. Includes and abstract and a 1-page outline. Bibliography lists 19 sources.

With black youth representing a higher population of substance abusers than other ethnic populations other than Caucasian, research findings indicate that drug and alcohol abuse is predisposed to ethnicity.
