Substance Abuse Counseling and Treatments
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 10 page paper discussing substance abuse counseling and treatments for people addicted to drugs and/or alcohol. Substance abuse counseling is an area within the social and therapeutic services discipline which requires counselors to have a high level of education (a B.A. with a Master’s preferred) and previous counseling experience and requires long and stressful counseling sessions, is not high paying and has a high burn out rate. Nevertheless, the necessity for substance abuse counselors in today’s society grows as does the incidence of alcohol and drug abuse especially in the adolescent populations. In addition to educational requirements, counselors must be skilled in many aspects of treatment and therapies including individual, group and family therapies as well as many techniques which include motivational therapy, relapse prevention, the Matrix-Model, supportive-expressive therapy, behavioral therapies and most recently recreational therapeutic programs in addition other external support programs such as the well proven 12-step programs introduced by Alcoholic Anonymous.
Bibliography lists 15 sources.
